I’ve been searching for a heart of gold
I had one once, but to my knowledge it’s been sold
I’ve sought its essence in the wrong places I’ve been told
Oh, I’ll always search for my fragile heart of gold

I once had a lover; a stepping stone to happiness
Left to the others; an unforeseen stray from bliss
But it’s all the better, for pain knows to comfort in moments like this
Though I’ll always wonder just exactly why that is

I’ve found I can’t cherish the things that I love
I attempt to do them justice, but it’s never quite enough
